In a school setting, teachers usually have certain expectations from their students. When those expectations aren’t met, it’s common to see consequences or punishments handed out.

But children with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) often struggle deeply with organization and performance. Many times, they simply can’t manage on their own. As a result, they end up facing criticism again and again not because they don’t want to succeed, but because they can’t reach the expected level without extra help. They genuinely want to be good students. They want to succeed. Our job is to help them get there.

Understanding Different Needs

In the Moxo test (a diagnostic tool for ADHD), four main areas are evaluated:
A – Attention
T – Timing and Management
I – Impulsivity
H – Hyperactivity

Each of these areas needs a slightly different kind of support.

Strengthening Attention
To help children focus better, they need frequent and gentle prompts. It helps for them to sit close to the teacher, who can give short, simple instructions in a warm tone. Because their attention span may shift quickly, the shorter and clearer the instruction, the easier it is for them to follow.

Even physical assistance can go a long way. Helping them open a book or pointing to the line they’re reading isn’t “babying” them, it’s meeting a real need with kindness.

Often, children with ADHD prefer to sit in the back of the classroom, thinking it’s more comfortable or that they won’t bother anyone. But sitting at the back can make them feel invisible, and their only connection with the teacher becomes warnings or corrections. Sitting near the front gives the teacher a chance to make eye contact, offer encouragement, and guide them with short instructions that keep them present and learning.

If you notice a child is losing focus, gently invite them into an activity, it can help bring them back.

Improving Time Management

To help with planning and execution, you can work with them on making daily schedules, task lists, and action steps. These tools aren’t just helpful in the classroom, they’re also life skills.

Supporting Impulsivity

Impulsivity, acting before thinking, can be improved by simple strategies. For example, teaching them to repeat a question before answering it helps slow things down. You can also encourage them to explain why they gave a certain answer. These steps help strengthen the habit of thinking before responding.

Allowing Movement for Hyperactivity

For children who have a lot of physical energy, don’t fight the movement, use it. Letting them move during learning (as long as it’s not disruptive) can help them absorb information better. Movement is not always a distraction, it can be a tool.

Customizing the Approach

Sometimes a child may show struggles in more than one of the four areas. In that case, the approach should be personalized to meet their unique combination of needs. No one-size-fits-all method works for ADHD. A thoughtful, compassionate adult can adjust and guide them in ways that feel safe and effective.

And always remember, they’re trying. They want to succeed. They just need our help getting there.

The Power of Repetition and Practice

The most effective way to help ADHD children develop positive habits is through loving repetition. For example, if the goal is to teach a child to open their book at the right time, practice doing it with them again and again. Over time, this repetition helps them internalize the action.

You might find yourself placing their finger on the reading line every time. That’s okay. Eventually, they’ll learn to do it on their own. What they need is consistent, gentle support.

These children need external cues to develop internal habits. When we show up again and again, with love and patience, those habits begin to form.
