In a world of uncertainty, many of us find ourselves dealing with feelings of anxiety and stress on a constant basis. During times of heightened stress, it’s crucial to adopt tools that help us move through challenges with more resilience. Following are 9 tips to help you get through difficult days with balance and calm.
1. Remember There Is a Creator
Nothing happens by chance. There is a Creator who watches over us at every moment. Strengthen your trust and faith in Him.
2. Breathe
In times of stress and tension, we often forget to breathe. When things feel overwhelming, take a moment to breathe deeply and slowly. Even if it feels too simple, deep breathing (inhale and exhale slowly- count to 7) brings oxygen to the brain and helps "turn off" the anxiety response. Start with shorter counts (2 in, 4 out) and gradually build up. Repeat 3–5 times.
3. Eat Well and Sleep Enough
Even when it's hard to prepare food, your body needs nourishment. Drink water, eat fruits and vegetables, and prioritize sleep. The mental relief that comes from good sleep cannot be replaced by anything else.
4. Limit News Consumption
Constant exposure to the news raises anxiety levels significantly. The brain doesn’t distinguish between actual danger and perceived danger. Continuous updates trigger the stress response. Limit your time spent on WhatsApp groups and live news feeds.
5. Write What You Feel
Writing is a powerful emotional outlet. Describe your emotions freely, without judgment or self-criticism. You can also include helpful reminders, like "most of the time, I feel safe," and lists of what you hope to do after the situation improves, or what you can do now to make the day a little better.
6. Say the Shema Twice Daily
Recite the Shema morning and night. The Pele Yoetz writes that saying Shema protects from harm. This mitzvah involves accepting G-d's kingship and commandments, and it strengthens faith and peace of mind.
7. Lean on Friends
Anxiety often comes with feelings of loneliness or despair. These thoughts are often not realistic. Find one or two friends you trust. Share what you’re going through, and allow yourself to feel supported and cared for.
8. Get Moving
Light exercise or short walks around the house are not only good for your body, but they relieve mental tension as well. Choose a physical activity that works for you and commit to doing it regularly.
9. Hug Someone
Studies show that hugging has real healing effects- it reduces stress, relaxes muscles, improves circulation, and even eases pain. Physical touch releases oxytocin, the hormone that promotes calm and connection.
When facing stressful and uncertain times, remember that you are not alone. With faith, patience, and small, simple tools, we can get through challenges more peacefully. Whether it’s taking a deep breath, staying grounded in a healthy routine, or leaning on loved ones, every small step can make a big difference.
