#VALUE!
When a family member has a physical illness, it’s generally not hard to tell. Fever, pain, difficulty moving, are all clear signs that something is wrong and make it easy for family members to step in with support and care.
What happens when someone in the family, heaven forbid, is developing a serious mental health issue that requires treatment? In those cases, the red flags aren’t always so obvious. Following are the warning signs everyone should know.
Note: One or two symptoms alone are not enough to diagnose a mental illness. Each sign can sometimes have an entirely non-psychological explanation. Mood swings may stem from hormonal changes, hallucinations can be triggered by a new medication, and oversleeping might just be a symptomless virus weakening the system. Still, if a basic medical workup doesn't reveal a clear explanation, it’s critical to consider a mental health evaluation.
1. Extreme Emotional Outbursts
Everyone has ups and downs, but most of us don’t swing from joy to rage or despair in seconds without clear cause. Sudden, disproportionate mood changes that defy logic may point to a mental health disorder.
2. Sleep Problems
If your family member has always been a light sleeper, that’s one thing. But if they suddenly experience chronic insomnia, or the opposite- excessive sleeping, that could indicate an emotional or psychological issue.
3. Social Withdrawal
Are they isolating themselves, avoiding interactions, or losing interest in activities they once enjoyed? Withdrawal is a common sign of internal distress.
4. Irrational Thinking
People struggling with this may assign unrealistic powers to themselves or others, such as believing they can control events or that someone is out to get them. Their speech may sound like a child fantasizing about being king and commanding the world.
5. Drop in Functioning
Is this person physically healthy but suddenly underperforming at work or school? Are their grades slipping, missing deadlines, or failing basic responsibilities they used to handle easily?
6. Drastic Changes in Eating Habits
Is someone who loved food now barely eating and claiming they’re never hungry? Is a previously health-conscious person now binging on junk food without control?
7. Hallucinations
If someone starts seeing or hearing things that aren’t real, they need immediate medical help.
8. Uncontrollable Anger
Has someone who was never known for a short fuse started reacting with explosive rage to minor things?
9. Confused Thinking
We all have off days, but if a family member consistently struggles to concentrate, solve problems, or stay mentally organized, it’s time to consult a doctor.
10. Multiple Unexplained Physical Symptoms
Today it’s the back, tomorrow the stomach, then the shoulder, then a migraine. If no physical cause is found for the barrage of symptoms, it’s worth exploring a psychological root.
Mental illness doesn’t always come with flashing lights and sirens. Recognizing the subtle warning signs might be the difference between long-term suffering and real recovery.
