Alongside common symptoms such as coughing and sore throat, fever is one of the most alarming signs for both parents and adults. Is everything we think we know about fever actually true? Doctors reveal the facts and bust the most common myths.

1. Fever always indicates a serious illness.
Not necessarily. Fever is a natural defense mechanism. “In most cases, it's a viral infection that resolves on its own,” says Dr. Tomer Levi, an internal medicine specialist. A mild fever can be a normal response and doesn't always require immediate treatment.

2. You must lower a fever quickly.
Not always. “Fever shows that the body is fighting an infection,” explains Dr. Michal Bar-On, a pediatrician. Forcing the fever down can sometimes interfere with healing. Unless the fever is very high or causing extreme discomfort, there’s no need to panic.

3. Children with a fever must stay in bed.
Partially true. If the child is alert, drinking fluids, and feeling okay, there’s no need to force bed rest. “Light movement can actually help improve how they feel,” notes Dr. Bar-On.

4. A fever over 40°C (104°F) is always dangerous.
Not exactly. While high fevers should be monitored, they aren’t necessarily life-threatening. “The main concern is the cause of the fever, not just the number on the thermometer,” emphasizes Dr. Levi. Seek immediate care if symptoms like seizures appear.

5. A cold bath will quickly lower the fever.
Not recommended. “Sudden temperature changes can do more harm than good,” warns Dr. Bar-On. Opt for a lukewarm shower if needed.

6. A fluctuating fever is more dangerous than a steady one.
False. Fever fluctuations are common in viral infections. “There’s no added danger unless there are other severe symptoms,” reassures Dr. Levi.

7. Fever-reducing medications treat the illness itself.
Incorrect. These medications only ease the symptoms. “They don’t treat the infection, they simply help you feel better while your body fights it off,” explains Dr. Bar-On.

When should you see a doctor?
Not every fever is a cause for concern. Listen to your body, stay calm, and when in doubt, consult a doctor. If the fever lasts more than three days, there is difficulty breathing, severe pain, an unexplained rash, or decreased  consciousness, seek medical help immediately.
