New Study Reveals: Nighttime Airplane Noise Poses Heart Health Risks

Concerning findings from UCL in London: Loud airplane noise, especially at night, may harm heart function and increase the risk of diseases like heart attacks, arrhythmias, and strokes. The study was based on cardiac imaging data of over 3,600 residents living near major airports in England, including Heathrow and Gatwick.

"Environmental noise, such as aircraft noise, can trigger stress responses in the body, leading to increased blood pressure and impairing heart function," explained Dr. Christian Topirceanu. According to him, prolonged exposure to nighttime airplane noise causes the release of the stress hormone cortisol, which can lead to weight gain and overall damage to the cardiovascular system.

The researchers emphasized that airplane noise is different from other noises because it is unpredictable, making it difficult for the brain to adapt. Another study found that the heart function of those exposed to nighttime noise decreased by 10% to 20% compared to those who moved to quieter areas.

Professor Anna Hansell from the University of Leicester concluded: "The quality of our sleep is a major factor affecting health. It's important to continue researching how we can reduce the damage caused by nighttime environmental noise."

The study highlights the need to review night flight policies in densely populated areas and adhere to the World Health Organization's guidelines for maximum noise levels.
