Winters bring cold weather, winds, rain, and a spike in seasonal illnesses. We all know that moment when we start coughing, feel a cold coming on, or just feel “off”, and in a panic, we rush to the doctor. Is it possible to stay healthy, avoid sickness, and actually feel good during the cold season?

Following are 11 practical (and spiritual) tips to help you get through winter in good health:

1. Keep Your Body Warm
Cold temperatures can weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to illness. Dress in warm layers, wear hats and scarves, and don’t forget gloves and socks, especially when going outside.

2. Practice Good Hand Hygiene
Winter is a time when we spend more time indoors—but don’t get lazy with hygiene. Wash your hands often, especially after being outside or touching public surfaces. Hands are one of the main ways germs and viruses spread.

3. Boost Your Immune System
Nothing protects you better than a strong immune system. Eat a healthy, balanced diet that includes immune-supporting vitamins such as vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, and magnesium to help your body fight off viruses.

4. Stay Hydrated
Even when it’s cold, drinking plenty of water or warm tea helps maintain body hydration, which supports your immune system and prevents winter dehydration.

5. Avoid Crowded Indoor Spaces
Closed, crowded places increase the risk of catching viral infections. The less time you spend in packed indoor areas, the lower your chances of getting sick.

6. Keep Exercising
Physical activity boosts immunity, supports overall health, and relieves stress. Don’t let winter stop your workouts. With the right gear and a little creativity, home workouts or winter jogging can keep you feeling great.

7. Get Enough Rest
No matter how busy you are, don’t compromise on sleep. A tired body is less effective at fighting infections. Aim for at least 7–8 hours of sleep a night to support your health.

8. Manage Stress Levels
High stress can weaken your immune system and leave you more vulnerable to illness. Find ways to unwind with meditation, reading, or spending time with loved ones.

9. Be Ready with a Bowl of Hot Soup
If you’ve already caught a cold or the flu, hot soup can be a great remedy. It helps relieve nasal congestion, soothes the throat, and delivers nutrients to support recovery.

10. Maintain Clean Air at Home
Winter often means closed windows and dry indoor air, which can trap germs. Make sure to air out your home regularly and use ventilators or humidifiers to maintain healthy indoor air quality.

11. Don’t Forget the Power of Prayer
Even a short daily prayer can bring peace of mind and emotional strength. Take a few minutes each morning or evening to say a personal prayer for your physical and emotional well-being. Believing that health is ultimately in G-d's hands can strengthen you spiritually, and possibly support your immune system too.

At the end of the day, all we can do is make our best effort. The real protection—whether recovery or prevention—is ultimately in higher hands. Daily prayer isn’t only spiritual, but is a source of resilience and grounding. When personal effort meets genuine faith, you gain double the strength. Do what needs to be done, but also make space for prayer. Your health is always in G-d’s hands.
