High blood pressure, often called the "silent killer," is one of the most widespread health issues in the Western world. It is estimated that the condition causes millions of deaths each year. Senior dietitian from the British Heart Foundation (BHF), Victoria Taylor, shared on the Metro website a list of foods and beverages to avoid or reduce consumption of, in order to decrease the risk.
Taylor emphasized that salt is a major factor in raising blood pressure because it causes the body to retain fluids. Most of the salt we consume comes from processed foods like bread, crackers, sauces, and canned goods. She recommends checking food labels, choosing low-sodium products, and opting for home cooking with small amounts of salt.
She further added that while sugary and fatty foods do not directly affect blood pressure, they can lead to weight gain, worsening the problem. A possible solution is switching to healthier snacks such as fruits, nuts, or natural yogurt.
Regarding alcohol consumption, Taylor noted that excessive drinking is known to increase blood pressure and contribute to weight gain over time. She advises drinking in moderation, if at all. Caffeine, according to her, causes a temporary rise in blood pressure, but moderate consumption of up to five cups a day is considered safe for most people.
It's important to be aware of other products containing caffeine, such as energy drinks, chocolate, and soft drinks.
The expert stresses that it's not necessary to completely avoid these foods, but to consume them in moderation and be aware of their effects. She concludes that the DASH diet, a nutritional approach developed in the 1990s, has been proven effective in reducing blood pressure and promoting overall health.
