A growing concern in recent years has become prolonged sitting on the toilet, due to the common habit of phone use. Experts warn that this can pose serious health risks. According to Dr. Lai Shu, a colorectal surgeon at the University of Texas, extended time spent sitting on the toilet increases pressure on the blood vessels around the rectum, which can lead to hemorrhoids and weakened pelvic floor muscles.
Dr. Shu explains: “When patients come to me with complaints, one of the first things I ask is how much time they’re actually spending on the toilet. Gravity makes it harder for the body to pump blood back to the heart. When you sit on an open toilet seat for a long time, it compresses the area and increases pressure on the rectum, causing blood to pool. This significantly raises the risk of developing hemorrhoids. We're now seeing more and more people spending longer periods in the bathroom, and it's very unhealthy for the pelvic floor.”
Experts recommend limiting toilet time to just five to ten minutes. To reduce health risks, it’s best to avoid prolonged sitting, maintain proper posture, and use a small footstool to elevate your legs while seated. A high-fiber diet and proper hydration can also help prevent constipation, reducing the need for extended time in the bathroom. If pain or symptoms persist, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional.
