A study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology reveals groundbreaking findings about the link between coffee consumption and anxiety levels.
The study found that caffeine- found in coffee, chocolate, and tea- affects the body in a similar way to anxiety, producing overlapping symptoms. “Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system and blocks the effects of adenosine- a chemical responsible for calming the brain and reducing activity- thereby increasing alertness and wakefulness,” one researcher explained. “However, high doses of caffeine can lead to overstimulation and trigger symptoms similar to anxiety, such as rapid heartbeat, excessive sweating, hand tremors, restlessness, and tension.”
The researcher and his colleagues found that in people with anxiety, even moderate amounts of caffeine can intensify these symptoms. “The effect is related to how caffeine increases adrenaline production in the body, which can worsen feelings of stress and hypervigilance. Some people have a genetic predisposition that causes them to metabolize caffeine more slowly, making them more sensitive, so that even a single cup of coffee can provoke anxiety-like symptoms in these individuals.”
The recommendation is to pay attention to anxiety symptoms after consuming coffee, and consider switching to caffeine-free alternatives if necessary. Individuals who are sensitive to caffeine or already struggle with anxiety should be aware of its effects and reduce their intake gradually and mindfully.
