Eating pistachios every day may offer powerful benefits for eye health and cognitive performance, thanks to their high content of lutein, a natural antioxidant that protects against age-related damage.
A study from Tufts University’s Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy found that daily pistachio intake significantly increased macular pigment optical density (MPOD)- a key factor in protecting the retina and reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), one of the leading causes of blindness in older adults.
Key Findings from the Study
Participants who ate 57 grams of pistachios per day showed an increase in MPOD after just six weeks, with improvements continuing throughout the 12-week study.
Pistachios stood out among nuts because they are the richest source of dietary lutein, which plays a vital role in shielding the retina from blue light and oxidative damage. “This study shows that pistachios aren’t just a healthy snack- they’re also a significant ally in preserving vision as we age,” said Dr. Tammy Scott, lead researcher on the study.
A Natural Approach to Eye Health
Researchers concluded that regular pistachio consumption could serve as an effective, natural dietary strategy for maintaining long-term eye health and protecting against age-related vision decline.
If you’re looking for a snack that’s both delicious and beneficial, pistachios might just be the smartest (and greenest) choice for your eyes and your brain.
