Fruits play a key role in a healthy diet, especially regarding heart health. While many people enjoy the benefits of grapes, pomegranates, and blueberries, there’s one fruit that stands out above the rest. Cardiologist. Dr. Joel Kahn, heart health expert and author of The Whole Heart Solution, explains why apples are his top choice for protecting heart health, and the reason he eats one every single day.
Many fruits are considered heart-healthy because they are rich in vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants. Dr. Kahn recommends eating between 1.5 to 2.5 cups of fruit a day and explains, “Fruits are colorful, delicious, and packed with nutrients that lower the risk of heart disease and support better brain function.”
Research shows that grapes, blueberries, pomegranates, and even avocados can help lower blood pressure, reduce oxidative stress (a condition where the body struggles to manage free radicals), and raise levels of good cholesterol (HDL). “Studies show that fruit consumption boosts blood flow to the brain and improves cognitive performance in older adults,” says Dr. Kahn.
Still, despite all the benefits of other fruits, Dr. Kahn swears by the apple for heart health. “There’s not a day that goes by without me eating an apple,” he says. Apples are high in dietary fiber, which supports gut health- a factor closely linked to cardiovascular health. “A fiber-rich diet is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease,” he adds.
Apples are also a good source of vitamin C and quercetin- two key compounds for supporting healthy arteries and heart function. Dr. Kahn concludes, “I eat an apple before a meal because it helps me eat less overall. It’s a win-win for weight management and a heart-smart diet.”
