How many times have you opened the fridge to find your cherry tomatoes rotten and inedible? Experts from the site Slurrp reveal several ways to keep them fresh and vibrant.

When it comes to storing fruits and vegetables, the approach depends on the item. Some should be kept at room temperature and not refrigerated. Cherry tomatoes are like regular tomatoes—only smaller and with a distinct flavor—so they can be stored similarly: keep them at room temperature to ripen before putting them in the fridge. To extend shelf life, store them in a sealed plastic bag in the refrigerator.

If freezing, remove the stems, lay the tomatoes in a single layer on a baking sheet, and freeze. After four hours, transfer to a storage bag or container. They're great for recipes like soups or sauces.

If using the fridge, know that it slows ripening and extends shelf life, but keep them in a slightly open plastic or glass container to avoid bruising and allow moisture absorption.

At room temperature, tomatoes last about a week before spoiling. Keep them in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and heat. This way, they'll stay in good condition.

Interestingly, a rotting fruit or vegetable can impact surrounding fresh produce. Choose fresh produce free from blemishes, insect damage, or rot. After shopping, place fruits and veggies on top of other groceries to prevent crushing on the way home.

Before storing, remove excess leaves like those on cucumbers, carrots, and radishes, as they increase humidity, encouraging decay. With veggies like lettuce, cabbage, and parsley, discard wilted leaves before storage.

For vegetables stored outside the fridge, place them in a shaded, cool spot. Avoid keeping them in closed cupboards or boxes; use ventilated baskets instead.

Final tip—maintain cleanliness. Weekly, clean out the vegetable drawer to keep bacteria and moisture at bay. Discard spoiled produce and use those ripe and ready to eat. It’s always a delight to make a smoothie from nearly overripe fruits.
