What Our Sages Said About Cinnamon

Cinnamon is mentioned in the Babylonian Talmud, the Mishnah, and the writings of Asaph the Physician and Maimonides (Rambam), where it appears under various names such as kinamon, kilofa, karfa, dar tzini, and sinamomi. In the Mishnah, it appears as an ingredient in charoset, used to offset the sharpness of bitter herbs. The Talmud mentions it as a remedy for bad breath and toothaches. Asaph the Physician recommended cinnamon for stopping internal bleeding, treating stomach upset, relieving kidney pain, and as a diuretic.

Maimonides, a great Jewish philosopher and physician, recommended cinnamon as part of a healthy diet. He described it as a plant that strengthens the heart and improves circulation. He also noted its antioxidant properties and its ability to help prevent various diseases.

Rabbi Avraham Dahan, in his book Talmud HaTz'machim, wrote that Rambam recommended cinnamon for digestive health, detoxifying the intestines, and cleansing waste buildup. Cinnamon was also used for opening liver passages, purifying the stomach, and neutralizing toxins such as scorpion or animal venom.

In the winter, drinking cinnamon tea was recommended to warm and strengthen the body, and cinnamon oil was applied to the head to treat colds and sharpen the senses.
