Many have extolled the virtues of spices in the past, but utilizing a few specific ones can particularly help with maintaining high energy levels and enhancing brain function. According to Dr. Brandon Crawford, a neurologist specializing in brain health, there are five spices you simply must have. He shared with SheFinds which these are and why they're so beneficial.
Black Pepper
Black pepper contains piperine—a compound that improves memory and cognitive function. Piperine aids the absorption of nutrients, and according to Dr. Crawford, "it can enhance the absorption of curcumin by up to 2,000%." This is likely why piperine is added to curcumin tablets found in pharmacies.

Turmeric
This spice, as previously mentioned, contains curcumin. Dr. Crawford noted that "curcumin boosts brain hormone levels." Additionally, turmeric has been proven to ease digestive disorders, reduce the risk of heart disease, and even combat depression.

Ginger
Ginger has been renowned for its qualities, especially in Chinese medicine, for thousands of years. It has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. "Ginger can help enhance cognitive function by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress," Dr. Crawford wrote. "It also helps balance neurotransmitters, which is crucial for focus and cognitive agility."

Nutmeg
This nut contains compounds that enhance memory and prevent neuronal pathway degeneration. "Nutmeg also has effects that improve mood, contributing to a more focused and positive mental state," he explained about the nut, which is also rich in antioxidants.

Cinnamon
A daily serving of this spice can help prevent diabetes. According to Dr. Crawford, cinnamon aids in maintaining stable blood sugar levels, which impacts brain function throughout the day.
