The beloved food, discovered in England in 1817, has become a popular dish with numerous versions and tweaks. However, classic fried fries aren't the healthiest choice for us, so it's worth considering more nutritious options.
Marianna Orbach, head of the nutrition and diet unit at Clalit Health Services in the Dan-Petah Tikva district, suggests, "Instead of fried fries, which are high in fats and calories, you can opt for oven-baked potato slices as a healthy alternative."
Although fries are a favorite among both children and adults, Orbach recommends baked potatoes as a substitute. "In this form, they offer nutritional benefits and should be included in your diet," she says. "Fried fries are considered junk food, rich in fats and calories, but when potatoes are baked or cooked, despite what some may think, they're amazing foods. They're high in complex carbohydrates, contain proteins, and are very low in fat when not fried."
According to Orbach, baked or cooked potatoes contain a significant amount of potassium. "Potassium is crucial for maintaining balanced blood pressure, preventing bone thinning, and reducing the risk of kidney stones," she explains.
Additionally, potatoes also have two important antioxidants - glutathione and lipoic acid - that help reduce cancer risk, detoxify the body, and strengthen the immune system. "Let's not forget, a whole potato, even a small one, baked or cooked, is a healthy and quite filling food," notes Orbach.
Potatoes can be included in the menu as a side dish or combined with beans, peas, or lentils for a satisfying and low-calorie complete meal. Moreover, you can pair baked potatoes with ricotta cheese for a full, satisfying meal that's also rich in calcium.
