You've bought a watermelon, cut it open with high hopes, and... were deeply disappointed. You expected a sweet and ripe fruit, but instead, got a tasteless one. Here's how to choose the right watermelon, with 4 important tips:

1. Size Matters

It makes sense to think a large watermelon would be sweeter, but in fact, a medium-sized one is preferable. Also, check the weight – if it feels heavy for its size, that's a good sign it's sweet and ripe.

2. Look at the Stem

If the stem at the top of the watermelon is dry, brown, and detaches easily, it's ripe. A green stem, however, indicates it's not yet ripe.

3. Brown Spots

Brown spots on the watermelon might look like defects, but they're actually signs of sweetness. The more brown spots, the more bees have examined the fruit.

4. Sunspot

A light spot on a watermelon shows where it rested on the ground, ripening in the sun. The yellower the spot, the riper the watermelon. A white spot means the opposite.
