In a recent survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of the World Cancer Research Fund, researchers investigated why people struggle to maintain a healthier lifestyle, including a balanced diet and increased physical activity.
The survey, conducted among 2,086 adults in the UK, asked participants what prevents them from leading a healthier lifestyle. The answer of 29% of men and 40% of women was that they are "too tired" to do so.
Additionally, 38% of respondents cited "lack of motivation" as the reason for not living healthier. Another 30% pointed to "food prices" as the main barrier. About 26% said "lack of time" is the main reason for their unhealthy lifestyle, while 25% mentioned "work-life balance" as their biggest challenge. Some 16% attributed it to "lack of self-confidence," and 12% said they "don't know where to start."
Interestingly, 24% of those surveyed stated "there's no particular reason preventing us from starting a healthy lifestyle," yet they still chose not to do so.
Matt Lambert, Head of Information and Health Promotion at the World Cancer Research Fund, commented on the survey results, saying, "People have busy schedules, and we know that for many, the last thing they want to do when they're tired or unmotivated is to start cooking from scratch or head to the gym."
Lambert also noted that 40% of cancer cases worldwide could be prevented with a healthier diet and increased physical activity.
