Do you love having instant coffee in the afternoon but feel it gives you stomach pain? Not pleasant at all. Dr. Maya Rozman addressed this question on her radio program on 103FM.
Coffee is a drink that many people consume several times a day. However, sometimes milk in coffee digests well, and other times it causes reflux and stomach pain. What's the reason?
The nutritionist started with a question - where is there more liquid, in milk or in a cucumber? Surprisingly, a cucumber is 95% liquid even though it is solid, and milk has much less liquid. Could this be why milk in afternoon instant coffee causes reflux? The answer is yes.
According to the nutritionist: "Milk is like food. Even though it's liquid, we should consider it as food, and it's difficult to digest just like any other protein in food. If I had a lunch full of vegetables and drink coffee at 4:00 PM - the vegetables are still in the stomach which is busy digesting them. During this time, instant coffee with milk adds more pressure and is harder to digest, doesn't go down like other fluids, and can cause reflux and a feeling of bloating."
