Individuals dealing with anxiety, psychological distress, or depression are often treated with medication and counseling. A new study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, found that physical exercise is also effective in improving mental health conditions. Experts emphasize that professional help should still be sought alongside exercise.
The study encompassed 1,039 clinical trials involving 128,119 participants, focusing on people with mental disorders and chronic conditions.
The study aimed to examine how physical activity could impact three parameters: depression, anxiety, and psychological distress.
The results demonstrated that engaging in physical exercise has positive implications for mental health, particularly for those suffering from depression.

The more intensive the physical activity, the greater the positive outcomes. Additionally, brisk walking is preferable to simple walking.
Researchers also noted that long-term physical activity leads to better mental health.
"Physical exercise greatly enhances symptoms of depression, anxiety, and distress across a wide range of adult populations, including the general population, those with diagnosed mental disorders, and people with chronic illness. Exercise should be a leading approach in managing depression, anxiety, and psychological distress," wrote the researchers.
The study reinforces the role of physical exercise in improving states of depression and anxiety. Nonetheless, experts continue to advocate seeking professional assistance.
