A study conducted by researchers at the University of California indicates that using sleeping pills could be a worrying solution for some users, significantly increasing the risk of dementia.
The study involved 3,068 adults living outside of nursing homes who did not have dementia, with an average age of 74.
Conducted over 15 years and published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, the research aimed to examine the link between sleeping pill usage and the risk of dementia in adults. Results showed a 79 percent increase in risk.

The sleeping pills used by participants included Ambien (Ambien), benzodiazepines like Halcion, Dalmane, and Restoril, as well as antidepressants.
According to the researchers, other factors might contribute to cognitive decline among the general population. "Frequent use of sleep medications was linked with an increased risk of dementia among older white adults. Further research is needed to determine the underlying mechanisms."
