#VALUE!
A gut health expert has taken to social media to reveal ten common household items that could be detrimental to our health. Even if your home is spotless, there are certain objects that can cause irreversible harm.
Dr. Jordan Haworth has shared on his TikTok account the items that 70% of people don't clean thoroughly enough. In a video that has garnered over 1.3 million views, the expert explains that our homes host thousands of bacteria and fungi. Here are the ten most problematic items:
Shoes
Dr. Haworth recommends removing shoes at the door since a 2015 study found that 45% of shoes carried bacteria capable of causing gastrointestinal diseases.
Microwave
The expert advises cleaning the microwave after each use to prevent exposing your food to harmful bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella, which can harm the gut.
Coffee Machines
Coffee machines are havens for bacteria and mold. Therefore, Dr. Haworth suggests dismantling the machine, washing its parts with vinegar, and changing the water with each use.
Counter Cloths
According to Dr. Haworth, counter cloths are among the most contaminated items in the home, so it's advisable to soak them in boiling water for at least 15 minutes once a week and allow them to dry before reuse.
Cutting Boards
For health reasons, Dr. Haworth recommends using separate cutting boards for meat, as those who keep kosher do. Additionally, he suggests replacing the board before it becomes worn, as bacteria can form in the grooves.
Bath Towels
Dr. Haworth advises washing bath towels after no more than three uses and recommends having separate towels for hand washing.
Refrigerator
Dr. Haworth recommends cleaning the refrigerator at least once a month with disinfectants, not just a damp cloth. He also suggests avoiding placing cardboard-packaged products in the fridge as they foster bacterial growth that can lead to intestinal illness.
Light Switches
Light switches, along with door handles and TV or AC remotes, are covered in bacteria, sometimes containing up to 20 times more bacteria than your toilet seat.
Pets
If you have pets, it's advisable to wash your hands after touching them or their food bowls.
