Limescale in water comes from limestone that rainwater slowly dissolves and carries into the ground. This rock turns into two parts: one is a calcium ion and the other a carbonate ion. When the water heats up, these two parts stick together again and form limescale, those white spots you see on taps, kettles, and other surfaces.
