Since the start of the conflict in Gaza, the Dutch National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (Nationaal Coördinator Terrorismebestrijding en Veiligheid (NCTV)) has heightened its vigilance against distinct pro-Palestinian activities.
The head of the agency recently stated, "The war in Israel has led to an increased risk of a terrorist attack in the Netherlands. The highest precautions are being taken, including careful protection of the Jewish community, synagogues, Jewish cemeteries, Jewish schools, and other community institutions."
The counterterrorism agency has established 5 levels of readiness for potential terrorist events. The first level, being the least dangerous, defines readiness as minimal—essentially implying no expected terror event at present. The highest level is critical alert, aimed at a terrorist event in the near future. Prior to the war, the country was on level three alert, indicating the possibility of a terror development at any moment.
However, since the start of the Gaza conflict up to today, Dutch police readiness stands at level 4, effectively preparing for a realistic chance of a terrorist event. "There are more and more signs that jihadist groups are preparing attacks in Europe. These organizations explicitly mention the Netherlands as one of their targets," says the head of the agency. "We need to be ready for that and to dismantle any gathering that even "smells" in that direction."
Unlike Sweden, which has shown significant shortcomings in handling pro-Palestinian protesters, Dutch police responded in a unified manner and without fear in the face of the threat.
