Discover the Surprising Household Uses of Cloves
Cloves aren't just for the kitchen. Learn how this spice can benefit your home beyond adding flavor to dishes.

We're all familiar with cloves, whether we use them in cooking or encounter their scent during the ceremonial *havdalah* on Shabbat. Cloves add a wonderful flavor and aroma to dishes, but they have a unique use you might not know about. Curious about why you should sprinkle cloves in your rooms or by windows? Let's dive in.
What are Cloves?
Cloves are a spice made from the dried flower buds of a tropical tree. The unopened flower bud, initially pink, turns a reddish-brown after drying. The unique shape of cloves resembles a small nail.
Beyond culinary uses, cloves offer various benefits:
1. Natural Bug and Ant Repellent:
Cloves release a strong aroma due to a high content of eugenol, a potent natural compound in the spice. Eugenol is not only antibacterial but also a natural insect repellent. Sprinkle clove powder around windows, doors, and any corner of your home to keep insects at bay.
For optimal use, grind whole cloves rather than buying pre-ground spice in bags. Alternatively, you can make a solution, detailed in the next section.
2. Mosquito Deterrent:
Cloves also serve as a natural mosquito repellent. Steep a few whole cloves in hot water for several hours, then strain. Apply a few drops of the solution on your skin to protect against bites. You can also use the solution at home if you prefer not to use powdered cloves.
3. Bed Bug Prevention:
Some suggest that cloves can prevent bed bugs and other pests from entering your home. Wrap some ground cloves in perforated foil (with small holes) and place it under your sheets or pillow.
