Why Marshmallows Might Not Be the Best Treat for Your Kids
An Australian paramedic warns parents about the choking hazard marshmallows pose to young children, showcasing the danger in a viral video.

An Australian paramedic is urging parents of young children, particularly those under 5, to think twice before giving them marshmallows. A video posted on the Instagram page "Tiny Hearts" demonstrates in a worrying manner how marshmallows can pose a choking hazard to little ones. In the viral clip, Nikki Yorkouz illustrates how the sticky candy's round shape can completely block a child's airway.
"When wet, marshmallows become sticky and more difficult to swallow, as well as to remove from airways," says Nikki. Using a clear plastic tube designed to simulate a child's airway, she inserts a marshmallow piece to show how it gets lodged inside the tube and resists extraction, highlighting its potential to obstruct breathing.
Nikki advises parents to cut large marshmallows into smaller pieces or opt for mini marshmallows instead.
