Renovation Surprise: Couple Finds 300-Year-Old Treasure Under Kitchen

A couple from England, who were renovating their home, unexpectedly discovered 264 gold coins worth over $800,000 beneath their old kitchen tiles. The thrilling discovery occurred just after they broke up the old flooring to replace it with new tiles.

According to a report in the British newspaper "The Sun," the couple initially thought they had found an electrical cable beneath the tiles. However, upon further investigation, they realized it was a glass container holding hundreds of coins dating from 1610 to 1727. They immediately contacted an auction house in London, and when a representative checked the treasure, the couple found out the coins were over 300 years old.

Reportedly, the gold coins belonged to the Fernley-Maisters family, a wealthy merchant family from Hull, England. Initially valued at approximately $231,390, the coins were ultimately sold at auction for $852,380. The auctioneer commented, "The sale was unique in many ways. The story of the coins, the discovery method, and the rare opportunity to buy them at auction," he said.

The couple who reside in the same house declined to reveal their identities.
