A miracle in Brazil: Two brothers, only nine and seven years old, lost their way in the rainforest and survived alone for more than a month.
The brothers, Glauco and Gleison Carvalho Ribeiro, are part of the "Palmyra" tribe located deep in the Amazon. When they were found, they recounted setting off from their home on February 18 to hunt birds. When asked how they survived and what they ate, they said, "We couldn't find anything to eat. We were very hungry."
The pair were found suffering from extreme malnutrition and were rushed to a hospital in the city of Manaus.
The notification to authorities came from a representative and spokesperson of the Palmyra tribe, who organized large search groups to look for the boys. The city's fire service spokesperson explained that a special search mission was canceled just days later as there was no sign of the children. It was only about a month later that a lumberjack discovered them and quickly informed authorities, saying, "I found two very thin, pale, and weak children. I think these are the kids you're looking for."
Media showed the children being returned to their tribe by a boat crossing the Amazon, where tribe members awaited on the other shore, cheering for their return.
