The Secret to Sparkling Dishes with Your Dishwasher—and a Small Risk

Before you toss that lemon after squeezing it for your salad, consider this: you can use it to clean your dishwasher—if you have one, of course. But there's a catch to be mindful of.

An American blogger shares an amazing tip that she claims not only cleans her dishwasher and makes it sparkle, but also leaves the dishes with a pleasant lemon scent.

While there are many cleaning products today that incorporate lemon extracts, she insists it's a different 'world' entirely. There's simply no comparison between those products and a squeezed lemon or lemon piece that you leave inside the dishwasher near the dishes.

And what about the lemon pieces that might remain in the dishwasher, requiring cleanup afterward? This part isn't the most pleasant, but there's a solution: "If cleaning the lemon pieces bothers you that much, you can also squeeze the juice from one lemon directly into the dishwasher itself. Of course, this should be in addition to the cleaning tablet, not instead of it," the blogger says, with many who have tried the tip confirming her claims.

"The lemon makes the dishes sparkle. I've been using it for years," wrote one woman among many others.

"You can also add baking soda along with the lemon, which makes it even shinier," suggested another comment.

However, there's a small risk in everyday use and in the long term —although sooner or later it will happen even without using lemon: the wear and tear of the dishwasher's rubber, which the acidity of the lemon can affect.
