Turning Tears to Smiles: Meet Truffles, the Cat Helping Kids Wear Glasses
When children visit Daniel Carroll's eye clinic, they're often scared. But there's one cat who helps them feel confident and get used to wearing glasses or a patch. Meet the cat making a world of difference.

Almost four years ago, Daniel Carroll rescued a stray kitten from a forest in Pennsylvania, USA. Today, this brave cat is changing the lives of hundreds of people by helping children with eye conditions feel more comfortable about wearing glasses and eye patches.
The cat, Truffles, now famous for her stylish glasses, assists her adopter, an optometrist who runs a clinic called "A Child's Eyes." The clinic primarily serves infants, toddlers, and elementary-age children. When the kids come in, many with severe eye issues requiring multiple surgeries, they often panic at anything approaching their eyes. That's when Truffles steps in.
"She's amazing with little kids," Carroll shared. "It takes me at least half an hour to try and make them realize they don't need to be afraid of me, and then Truffles comes out of nowhere, as if she knows exactly when I need her help."
Truffles jumps beside the child and tilts her head up for Carroll to fit her glasses. The kids' moods shift instantly. "Tears turn into smiles, and suddenly those glasses don't look so scary," Carroll says.
"Every time a kid cries, I put Truffles' glasses on her, and the kids immediately stop crying and put on their glasses. It happens countless times, and yet it's just as sweet each time," Carroll notes.
Truffles loves wearing glasses. She often falls asleep with them on and even resists when Carroll tries to take them off. According to Carroll, Truffles chooses from her 20 unique pairs every day. "If she had thumbs, she'd put them on herself. She really loves it," Carroll adds.
To many, Truffles might just seem like a cat willing to play around with accessories sometimes. But she's so much more for the children and parents she's helped. One of them is five-year-old Jewela, who was born with three genetic abnormalities affecting her vision. She had undergone 15 surgeries by six months of age! When she was one year old, she visited Carroll's clinic and met Truffles, and everything changed for her.
"You know those videos of kids hearing for the first time with hearing aids?" Jewela's mother, Janet, asked. "That's the experience Daniel and Truffles gave her when Jewela could see clearly for the first time. The first thing she saw was a kitten, and it changed everything for her."
For four years, Jewela visited Truffles regularly, whenever she needed new glasses or adjustments. "It wasn't scary for her to go to the clinic because Truffles was there," Janet explained. "She has a lot of frightening appointments, and she never wants to go, except for the ones with Truffles, where she doesn't feel anxious."
Truffles also helps kids with "lazy eye" who need patches. "It's not easy for kids to wear a patch," Carroll says. "They face more worry, fear, and confusion than with glasses." To ease them, Truffles wears an eye patch on her glasses, making them feel secure enough to wear their own patch.
Annie, a young girl who needs to wear a patch, says, "When Truffles wears a patch, it helps kids like me feel comfortable with ours, and that's really not something I like to do. It affects these kids' lives every day," Annie added.
