A baffling phenomenon was recently observed in Antarctica, leaving scientists in shock: how could a massive lake just 'disappear from the map'? This is precisely what researchers discovered in a new study based on satellite observations.
According to them, it was a lake in the east of the continent that could not be missed.
"It was sitting on a huge ice shelf holding 600-750 million cubic meters of water. Can you grasp what this means? That's more than all the water combined in Sydney Harbor or San Diego Bay. Such an immense amount of water doesn't disappear instantly and without reason."
Scientists continue to claim that this phenomenon adds to a growing number of events observed in recent years in Antarctica, including the recent 'Doomsday Glacier' movement that occurred about two weeks ago. "We suspect a crack formed in the ice shelf beneath the lake, a phenomenon scientifically known as 'hydrofracture.' Maybe that's what caused the water to drain into the ocean beneath the lake," explained Roland Warner, a scientist from the University of Tasmania, Australia.
Despite this seemingly logical explanation, it still doesn't entirely add up. "When you remove such a large volume of water from a floating ice shelf, you expect to see significant ground movement. Here it wasn't present. It's as if the water evaporated into thin air."
In the past, when such hydrofracturing phenomena were observed, researchers could explain where the water disappeared to, but that's not the case this time. Could the 'disappearing' water be related to the recent sea-level rise following the movement of the 'Doomsday Glacier'? Researchers have yet to solve the mystery.
