Surprising Experiment: The Duckling That Hatched from a Store-Bought Egg

28-year-old Adele Phillips was surprised to discover that a duckling managed to hatch from an egg she bought at the supermarket. Phillips read online about people incubating eggs to see what happens, and she decided to take on the challenge herself. She bought a standard carton of duck eggs from her local supermarket. To her surprise, a month later, a duckling emerged from one of the eggs.
Phillips started this unconventional experiment to prove people online wrong. She carefully planned each step, buying an incubator online. While waiting for it to arrive, she kept the eggs at the right temperature using an "airing cupboard". "I saw someone doing this challenge online and thought I’d give it a try. When I bought the eggs, my mom asked if I was sure about it. I knew I had to keep them warm and they had been on the shelf for a few days, so I wasn’t sure if it would work. I put them in the airing cupboard, but I had never done anything like this before, and I was shocked to find one of them was still fertile," she said.
When the incubator arrived a few days later, she placed it inside the cupboard next to the egg and turned it on three or four times a day to ensure the egg was at the right temperature. A month later, as mentioned, a healthy duckling hatched from the egg.
Phillips documented the experiment with her camera and couldn’t believe herself that something like this could happen. "I didn’t believe it could happen, until I did it myself," she wrote on social media. "Throughout the process, everyone thought I was crazy. I just did a little experiment, but everyone thought I’d end up with a hard-boiled egg. I proved them wrong, and now everyone is shocked."
