A Heartwarming Gesture: How a Boy's Lunchtime Request Sparked Kindness

Mothers often face many surprises in life, but when Josette's 14-year-old son, Dylan, asked if she could make him two lunches for school, it raised an eyebrow.

"My son was never a big eater, so yes, I was surprised by his request," she recalls.

After delving deeper into the reason for his request, Josette realized she was right; the extra lunch wasn't for him at all.

"It turns out there are kids at school who are hungry, and it's no joke," Josette says. "Dylan told me the lunch was meant for a young boy at school who only eats a cup of fruits during lunch break. Dylan spoke with him, and the boy shared that his mother couldn't afford more food. I immediately agreed and started packing two nutritious lunches every day."

Later, it became clear that the boy's mother was a single mom who had recently lost her job, making it impossible for her to afford school lunches. "It hit me very hard because it reminded me of our situation a few years back. My son and I were homeless, living in my car, and we had no food."

Beyond just agreeing to her son's request, Josette included uplifting notes with each lunch she prepared for her son and his new friend. Josette, also a single mom, was called to the principal's office where the boy's mother wanted to thank her personally for helping her son during this challenging time. "I don't think I did anything special," Josette says today. "I just did what anyone should do."

The boy's mother told Josette she is now back on her feet and offered to repay her for the lunches, but Josette firmly refused. "You don't pay money for good deeds," she said, instead asking the school administration to accept donations for other kids in need. "No child should be in a situation where they're hungry," she says. "We parents may face hard times, but a child shouldn't feel there's no money for food. It's a basic necessity."

Her request was honored, and the school's administration raised up to $400 to support this noble cause.
