Unexpected Joy: Surprise Twin Discovery During Birth

A Minnesota woman, anticipating one baby, was astonished to find a second child in her womb mid-delivery. "The baby came out healthy, but seven minutes later, we were all surprised when the midwife exclaimed, 'Oh, I can't believe it. There's another one.'"

When Megan Pfeifle from Minnesota, USA, discovered she was pregnant with her third child, she wasn't surprised to hear her baby might be bigger than average. "My two previous babies were both over ten pounds at birth," she says with a smile. "So, when they told me this baby was expected to weigh 13 pounds, I wasn't too worried."

Due to hospital restrictions in place because of COVID-19, neither her husband nor anyone else was allowed to accompany her for the ultrasound. "I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars just to do it alone," she explains. "I canceled the ultrasound and hoped for the best."

For reassurance, she scheduled an appointment with her personal doctor, who assured her everything was fine. "He examined me, and it was clear from him that I was expecting only one child," she recounts in an interview with CBS News.

When the time came for the birth last week, Megan decided on a home birth with two midwives by her side. "The baby came out healthy, but just seven minutes later, we were all in shock when the midwife said, 'Oh, I can't believe it. There's another one.' We didn't understand what she meant until we saw another head emerging. It was a surprise for all of us, but we are thrilled to end up with two. It truly was worth it."
