Madeline Carlborne is just six years old, but she knows all there is to know about fire safety.

Her dad, James, was a firefighter for 17 years. Although Madeline only learned about fire safety at her school a few months ago, she became a hero when she saved her family from a fire that broke out in their home.

Madeline awoke at two in the morning with a strong burning sensation in her eyes and throat. Although the smoke alarm went off, she saw thick smoke rising from the hallway and knew exactly what to do.

"I went to Mom and Dad's room and told Dad to get up, that there's a fire," Madeline recounted to the local media.

"I heard my daughter screaming: 'there's a fire,' 'there's a fire.' I jumped out of bed and realized there was smoke everywhere," James said. By then, the fire had engulfed the kitchen and living room on the first floor, but they could still head downstairs and escape through the door. "I quickly grabbed our other child, who's two, and we left the house just as we were. We didn't have time to take anything with us," Madeline's mother recounted. "I'm so grateful we're all safe thanks to our daughter. She's my angel, she makes me proud every day," the mother concluded.
