Tourists visiting an Australian beach over the weekend were left stunned when they discovered a rare fish washed up on the shore.

The fish belongs to the ocean sunfish family, known in English as Ocean Sunfish, which can weigh up to 2.5 tons.

Due to their incredible speed, it's rare to see them in the sea, let alone on the beach. "What causes them to wash ashore are the large ships passing by or plastic bags they swallow, mistaking them for jellyfish," explains Ralph Foster, an employee at a maritime museum.

The tourists, Tim Rothman and James Braham, reported seeing the fish in Victoria's Kenne River. "From afar, it looked like an alien. It was frightening to encounter it," the pair shared. A pair of veterinarians who arrived due to the uproar stated they had never seen such a creature of this size. "We thought it was a shark because of its huge fins. Only when we got closer did we realize it couldn't be a shark."
