Google Maps has captured many bizarre things, but this recently viral image is one for the books.
This strange spectacle was discovered by a traveler exploring Google Maps, searching for intriguing tourist spots in Finland for a family vacation.
Initially, the maps displayed vast, open fields in Finland. But then he stumbled upon an artistic installation called The Silent People. From afar, it appeared like a field of 'people' working, but up close... let's just say something seemed off.
True to their name, The Silent People don't move. They remain still, their gazes locked in the same direction.
What's With Their Heads? This Is Truly Bizarre
The traveler was clueless until he clicked a link explaining The Silent People. There, he learned it's an actual field with hundreds of scarecrows dressed in real human clothing, refreshed annually by donations.
And their heads? Simply bewildering: a bunch of straw-covered pears.
Who is behind this wild creation? An artist named Reijo Kela found the perfect spot to showcase his project: an open field near Highway 5 in Suomussalmi, Finland.
The installation was initially set up in 1988. It was moved from the neighborhood of Lassila in Helsinki to the Senate Square, then to the banks of the Jalonuoma River. In 1994, it was permanently relocated to this open field, where it apparently doesn't bother anyone.
