How critical is it to teach children to trust their instincts? Just ask 10-year-old Troy Luna from the U.S., who recently became a hero by listening to his gut rather than his friends.

It all began as Troy boarded his school bus at the end of a regular day.

But something didn’t sit right. Troy glanced at the bus driver and sensed that something was off with her driving. “I could smell something unusual coming from her seat, maybe smoke,” he later recounted.

Troy sat in his seat, but he felt compelled to act on the driver's odd behavior. “She hit the brakes really hard,” he recalls. “A few kids were thrown forward from the force.” Troy wanted to call the police, but his friends tried to convince him that there was nothing to worry about.

“She always drives like this,” they told him.

“I told them I didn’t care, I felt it wasn’t right, and I made the call.”

When the driver missed a turn, mounted a curb, and started swearing, Troy gathered his courage and dialed the police. At that moment, there were 30 kids aged 5-10 on the bus, and Troy most likely saved their lives.

When officers stopped the driver and asked her to exit the bus, they administered a breathalyzer test—which she failed. It revealed she was heavily intoxicated, leading to her arrest. The charges against her claimed she endangered the children by driving under the influence.

“I’m proud that out of all the kids there, it was my son who took this brave step,” Troy’s mother said in an interview with the local media.
