When Officer Robert Just was called to a 'Bank of America' branch, he couldn't believe his eyes when he was instructed to arrest a 92-year-old man, whom the bank employees accused of verbal assault.
The incident began when the elderly man tried to withdraw his monthly allowance from his bank account, but none of the employees were willing to explain that he couldn't do so until he renewed his expired ID.
As the man was passed from one counter to another without receiving explanations, he understandably became frustrated. This only added fuel to the fire until finally, the bank manager decided to call the police. "I don't understand how something like this can happen in a civilized country," said the good officer, who decided to take immediate action by taking the elderly man by the hand to the American Department of the Interior to issue a new ID.
But that's not the end of it.
After the elderly man received his new ID, the officer drove him back to the bank so he could withdraw his allowance.
People who witnessed the event and were moved decided to share the story on social media until a picture of the officer holding the elderly man's hand while assisting him with his errands went viral.
Online, there was quick praise for the good officer. "Who among us doesn’t have a grandpa? That's how I hope they would treat mine," said one comment.
"What this grandpa wanted was just to keep his independence. Kudos to the good officer who helped him with his chores in the most respectful way possible," said another comment.
A thought to ponder: Honoring the elderly is an important mitzvah in the Torah, derived from the words to honor and adorn, not to exclude or distance. Even when it happens far from us, in distant lands, it's good to give ourselves this reminder, and go with it. The elderly certainly need it, but we do even more.
