When Sharon Grant was pregnant, everything was fine until the 28th week. Doctors informed her of complications with the umbilical cord and placenta, necessitating an emergency cesarean to deliver her baby girl. Her daughter Pixie weighed just 498 grams, and shortly after birth, she was taken to the intensive care unit where doctors fought for her life.
Time passed, and Sharon and her family were in the dark about their baby's condition, left wondering why no one updated them.
Eventually, it became clear that the doctors were at a loss when Pixie was born, mainly because the equipment in the neonatal unit wasn't suited for a baby her size, even smaller than an adult's hand. "They considered every solution available to keep Pixie warm, but nothing worked. Time was pressing, and they had to act decisively," Sharon wrote on her Facebook page.
A Bag Keeps Tiny Bodies Warmer than a Blanket
Then, one medical staff member had an idea—though it might sound odd, it’s more common in certain hospitals worldwide than we'd think. The staff member took a plastic bag and simply placed the baby inside. An article in the New York Times soon after described this amazing method used for prematurely born infants.
According to the medical team, the bag retains body heat more effectively than a blanket, helping maintain a stable temperature over time. "It was so strange seeing my Pixie inside a plastic bag," Sharon shared in later interviews, "but I trusted the doctors knew what they were doing."
Pixie stayed in the plastic bag for 18 days, during which her mother wasn’t allowed to get close. "It was too life-threatening to touch her," Sharon explained. "I just stood by, watched, and prayed for her."
A month later, Pixie was discharged from the hospital in stable condition. "The doctors called her, quite rightly, a 'medical miracle.' Today, she is a relatively healthy three-year-old, although she's still smaller than other children her age," her mother concluded.
Truly one of Hashem’s wonders.
