The scientific community is abuzz: A pair of New Zealand divers recently uncovered an extraordinarily rare sea creature that resembles an eel but is fundamentally different.
According to scientists, this mysterious creature is often referred to as the 'unicorn of the ocean'.
The divers, Steve Hathaway and Andrew Buttle, encountered the creature off the eastern coast of New Zealand, near Whakaari Island. The meeting with this rare animal, with its long, tubular, and transparent body, cast a giant 'shadow' on the divers and quickly created a stir on social media. The news soon reached the scientific community worldwide, who identified it as a Pyrosome.
The Pyrosome is a siphonophore that feeds on plankton and can grow up to seven meters long. Scientists say this is a particularly rare find, as Pyrosomes typically live in colonies at ocean depths that humans rarely reach.
