Every so often, we hear about cases like these, and each time we try to understand how it's possible that someone declared dead by medical standards suddenly returns to life.
While such tales used to be rare, global statistics suggest an increase in reports of people coming back from the dead, often in shocking circumstances. Families frequently accuse doctors of prematurely declaring death and sealing their loved ones' fates.
A Toddler Sits Up at His Own Funeral and Requests Water
In June 2011, two-year-old Kelvin Santos from Brazil was laid to rest after succumbing to a severe infection. During the funeral, the boy astonished his relatives and friends by sitting up in his coffin and asking his dad for a glass of water. "The boy literally sat up in the open coffin and said, 'Dad, give me a glass of water,'" witnesses reported.
His father, Antonio Santos, was in disbelief. "I thought a miracle had occurred. My son had come back to life," he shared in a local interview. Despite receiving water and drinking it, Kelvin lay back down in the coffin and took his final breath once more.
The astonishing story spread nationwide, and media outlets discussed the boy who supposedly died twice. Antonio took legal action against the hospital, claiming the doctors wrongly declared his son dead the first time.
Grandmother Crawls Out of Her Coffin to Make Dinner
This case shocked the small village of Liulu in China. Elderly Li Xiufeng had been declared dead and placed in a coffin, only to mysteriously disappear from it. Friends and family visiting to pay respects found the coffin empty.
A neighbor who regularly checked on her had found Li unresponsive and assumed she was dead. They organized her funeral, leaving her in the coffin for days as is custom there.
When she was not found in the coffin, villagers searched for her and finally located her at home, cooking dinner. "I didn't understand why I was in that strange box. I must have slept a long time," she casually recounted, explaining her hunger upon waking.

Two days later, the family gathered for the funeral of Fagilyu Mukhametzyanov. Just moments before her coffin was lowered, she suddenly awoke, confused and hearing the eulogies.
Realizing she was about to be buried alive, she screamed hysterically, frightening attendees away. Those who stayed rescued her, but she succumbed to another heart attack induced by shock, and the burial proceeded.

In Dhamar, Yemen, a 65-year-old experienced a heart attack and was declared dead by doctors. Hours later, as his funeral began, he awoke and shouted angrily.
Mourners were shocked as the supposed deceased emerged from the coffin, exclaiming, "Wicked people, you tried to kill me, to bury me alive." After the bewilderment settled, they celebrated what seemed like a miracle.
Baby Awakens After 12 Hours in a Mortuary
Analia Bouter from Argentina gave birth to a premature baby with no pulse or breath. Tests confirmed the baby girl was stillborn, but the determined mother insisted on seeing her child before she was taken to the morgue, against hospital policy.
The couple, frightened but insistent, was finally allowed in, where they found their baby's coffin on a table.
As the mother reached into the coffin to feel her daughter's hand one last time, she sensed a movement. Initially dismissing it as a hallucination born of grief, she later heard a faint cry.
It was the cry of her daughter, who had suddenly awakened after 12 hours in refrigeration. "We thought we were dreaming," said the bewildered parents. The girl's uncle, quick to react, lifted her out and rushed for medical help. Doctors couldn't explain how she survived without harm.
