Kate Poynton, a young woman from the United States, recently passed away after a difficult 18-month battle with cancer. Understanding the reality of her condition, she began preparing 'supplies' for the journey before passing and left letters for her family meant for the next 20 years.
Inside a large box, not only letters but also birthday blessings awaited her husband and children—an act of love anticipating a day everyone hoped would never come.
Her husband Chris discovered the large box shortly before Kate passed away. She revealed the 'treasure' to him, making him swear not to open the box a moment too soon.
"Keeping Our Bond Alive"
Chris shares that Kate, who worked as a caregiver for the elderly, often helped them write similar letters to be read by their loved ones after their passing.
Since 2016, Chris waits eagerly for his birthday each year to open another letter from his beloved. The letter he received for his 40th birthday moved him profoundly, yet he says, "I suspect every letter will have the same impact because it helps keep the connection with my wife alive despite her absence. It's more than visiting her grave; it feels like meeting and talking to her once a year, really preserving our relationship," he explains.
"We discovered Kate's bone cancer in 2011," Chris recounts. "The doctors told us she had about 12 years left to live, but she made it to 2016. I'm incredibly thankful for the time we had together."
Kate's box of letters contains messages until 2036, by which time Chris will be about 65.
