Recently, the story of a very special nanny made headlines in the U.S., as she sacrificed herself to save the two-year-old she cared for. It was a fairly ordinary day for nanny Caroline Maurer and two-year-old Fox. "It was our regular morning walk. I put Fox in a stroller with everything he needed for the outing, and we left the house," recounts the nanny. Courtney and Bill Davis-Volkoff, Fox's parents, had no idea that morning would change their lives completely. "Every parent would do anything to protect their child in danger," they say today. "But it's not a given that if the parents aren't there, it will be the nanny who takes that role."

On that morning, March 28, 2017, Fox's parents weren't there to protect him, and they are eternally grateful to the nanny who protected the toddler she cherished so much. "We were crossing the street, and I checked multiple times to ensure no cars were coming. Suddenly, when we were already in the middle, I saw a car appear out of nowhere, speeding towards us. In seconds, it was right upon us."

In a split second, Caroline realized she didn't have time to hesitate, and quickly assessed the situation – it was either her or the child. "It was clear to me that if I didn't quickly push the stroller aside, my dear Fox would be hurt, and I couldn't let that happen. I pushed the stroller as hard as I could towards the sidewalk, then raised my arms to shield my head just before the car hit me."

Experts who arrived later at the scene marveled at the miracle and stated that without Caroline's quick thinking, there was no chance both she and the toddler would have survived.

As a result of the direct impact, both of Caroline's arms were crushed, but miraculously, she survived, and Fox was unharmed. "The last thing I heard him say was, 'Nanny Caroline, I love you,'" the nanny tearfully tells the local CBS news. "It broke my heart, because my arms hurt so much I couldn't hold him."

Sitting aside, Fox's parents said, "Caroline is now our family for life, and nothing is going to change that. A good deed is one thing, but a life-saving act is something entirely different, and we're not sure anyone else would have acted as she did," they conclude.
