Every end of the year sees a flurry of ominous predictions swirling on the internet about the year to come. This time, as 2018 approaches, Baba Vanga, a Bulgarian mystic who passed away over two decades ago, is in the spotlight. Her fan base attributes to her an extraordinary vision of the future, claiming she foresaw everything from the fall of the Twin Towers to Obama's election. (Just don’t remind them she also predicted Obama would be the last president, or that there would be a nuclear war in Europe between 2010 and 2014.)

So what's in store for 2018 according to Baba Vanga? China will become the world’s dominant superpower. Oh, and a new form of energy will supposedly be discovered on Venus after a manned spacecraft is sent there.

First off, it's important to note that Baba Vanga didn’t write down her own predictions – she was blind, and it's unclear if she could write at all. She had assistants who claim they only wrote what she said. Believe them if you will.

Is there any truth to the 2018 predictions now making the rounds? Experts have long discussed the possibility of China’s GDP surpassing that of the United States in the coming years, but the latest research projects this won't happen until 2030. Furthermore, even when it does, China's per capita income is not likely to exceed that of the U.S. – after all, there's more money to be shared among many more people. Economically, China isn’t poised to take the lead so unquestioningly anytime soon.

But what's particularly intriguing is the prediction about a new energy source being discovered on Venus after a manned mission. As of now, no space agency is known to be planning such a mission, certainly not a manned one. But here's the kicker: the financial magazine 'Forbes' revealed that Baba Vanga’s original list of predictions first surfaced online a decade ago – and that news about Venus was originally attributed to... 2028.

How did this prediction suddenly jump forward by ten years? That’s a mystery only Baba and her supporters might solve.
