When it comes to parenting, it often seems like everyone knows better than the parents themselves—especially new parents who are just beginning to navigate caring for their children. Pediatricians and child-rearing experts are full of professional advice that’s supposed to turn us into the best parents possible. However, a simple sign in a Spanish doctor's office quickly became a sensation online.
A Spanish blogger named Jaione shared the sign on her blog, which teaches mothers how to trust their instincts and understand that no one knows better than they do what is best for their children. "I saw this sign on my pediatrician's door and decided to share it because I think every mom can learn a thing or two from it," she wrote as she included the sign's text, which soon became viral and was translated into multiple languages.
What's the Best?:
The best is not breastfeeding
The best is not giving your baby a bottle
The best is not holding your baby
The best is not placing your baby that way
The best is not swaddling your baby like this
The best is swaddling your baby the other way
The best is not feeding your baby purees
The best is only feeding your baby natural foods
The best is not what your mother says
The best is not what your partner says
The best is not having a nanny for your baby
The best is not leaving your baby with grandparents
The best is not raising your child this way
The best is not raising your child that way
Do you know what truly is the best?
The best is you!
Only you know what makes you feel good
Your instinct as a mother will tell you what’s best for your child
You know how to help them
You know what keeps you calm and happy
And when you’re calm and happy, so is your baby
Because if you feel good, then your children get the best—because you are the best.
When you feel secure, they feel secure too.
Let’s try to stop telling other parents what’s best
And work on creating that best ourselves.
Because what's best for our children is us!
