When Edwigs Vilatoro booked a large table at a restaurant, it was to celebrate his 61st birthday with family and friends. Coordinating with the waitstaff, Edwigs arrived early and elegantly set up the table by himself. He placed a chocolate cake at the center of the table, ensured there were enough plates and glasses, handed out party hats, and decorated the chairs on his own.
And then, with everything ready, he sat down and waited...
Time dragged on. Half an hour, an hour, and two hours passed... During this time, Edwigs tried reaching out to his invitees, but not one answered and no one showed up to the party.
Eventually, realizing he wouldn't be celebrating with his loved ones, Edwigs stood up, cleared his throat, and asked for the attention of the restaurant's patrons.
"Today is my birthday, and I'm turning 61," he started. "I intended to celebrate this evening. I bought a cake because I expected to meet my family and friends here. I hoped my children, grandchildren, and wife would come, but as you can see, no one showed up."
At this point, Edwigs looked with tear-filled eyes into the audience and said, "So, I ask now if there's anyone who would like to join me to celebrate my birthday and sing 'Happy Birthday' to me. If there is, I would be eternally grateful."
After such a speech, there wasn't a dry eye, and naturally, the guests came up one by one, hugged him, and wished him 'Happy Birthday.' Then, everyone sang 'Happy Birthday' in unison to the delighted birthday celebrant, who couldn't hide his excitement. The quick response from the guests was shared widely and created a big reaction, but then Edwigs stood at the center once more, asking for attention.
"I'm grateful for the warmth and humanity you've shown here today, but I must ask your forgiveness," Edwigs addressed them. "I want to confess that what happened here was just a social experiment to see how strangers would react when faced with such a situation. You all, I must say, handled it as wonderfully as possible," Edwigs concluded.
