Meet Angus Palms, a 13-year-old boy from the UK whose body ceased to grow at the age of three due to a rare chromosomal anomaly. Featured on a local TV show where he appeared with his mother, Angus captured the hearts of viewers with his laughter, smile, and remarkable joy for life.
Angus was born at a healthy weight of 2.7 kilograms, but due to his rare syndrome, he currently weighs only 12 kilograms. "During my pregnancy and Angus's birth, nothing aroused our suspicion. We had no idea something might be wrong," explains his mother, Thandie. "When we were rushed to the hospital in Manchester and a few genetic tests were done, we realized that the doctors suspected something. It was only after three weeks, when the test results came back, that we understood there was a problem with Angus's chromosome sequence."
This syndrome is so rare that initially, doctors did not even suspect it. It occurs only once in 7 million (!) births, with its main symptoms being an inability to speak or walk, and often self-harming behavior due to frustration from the inability to communicate normally. "Angus is not much different from any child with Down syndrome, even though that's not his condition. Today I realize he will never live an entirely independent life and will always depend on me, but as long as I'm here, we believe we will manage," Thandie smiles. "We'll keep living and thriving, against all odds."
