New Delhi: Passersby attempting to withdraw cash from an ATM on the street were stunned to hear faint voices coming from the machine and notes emerging instead of the money they intended to withdraw. The notes read: 'Help, please help me', and at first, those who received them were filled with laughter. "We were sure it was a prank or some sort of joke," some of them told the local media.
When it kept happening, one person took charge and contacted the police. Only then, when the police arrived, did the gravity of the situation become clear. It turned out the faint voices and pleading notes were from a technician who had come to service the ATM and unfortunately got trapped inside. "Please, I'm begging you. I'm stuck here and don't have a phone, please call my boss," said a note received by an officer through the cash dispensing slot.
It turned out to be a contractor who accidentally locked himself inside, with no way to notify his employer because he left his phone in the truck parked on the side of the road. "I knew the only way to get out was to slip notes to people trying to withdraw cash from the ATM," the man recounted after being rescued.
