A new study conducted at the National Aspergillosis Center in Manchester has identified several compelling reasons to reconsider drying laundry indoors.
Professor David Denning, who led the study, issued a public warning against this 'convenient' practice, stating that drying clothes indoors increases humidity levels by 30%. This heightened moisture creates an ideal environment for mold spores to flourish, including Aspergillus. Breathing in these spores can lead to lung diseases, asthma, sinus problems, and occasionally even irreversible damage.
"Most of us are immune to fungi that thrive in such damp conditions, and our internal systems are strong enough to combat infections," said Professor Denning. "However, individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with asthma, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, AIDS patients, and people with various health issues, might develop pulmonary aspergillosis if exposed to these fungi."
In such cases, according to Professor Denning, Aspergillus can be lethal and cause irreversible harm to the sinuses and lungs. "Therefore, my advice is to dry laundry outside or in a dryer, even if it's less convenient. Your health is far more important, and it's crucial to follow these guidelines to safeguard your well-being and safety," he advised.
