Imagine living without kosher food availability, almost disconnected from civilization, and having to study via the internet? These are the everyday realities for 6-year-old Mendel Reichman, who lives with his family in Manaus, Brazil.
What is it like raising kids in a place where it rains for months on end, and Jewish children have no one to play with? It's not easy, but Mendy isn't complaining. "I'm here for an important mission, and I'm proud of what my parents are doing," he says.
One of the biggest challenges that Mendel and his family face is the lack of formal Jewish education. "We dedicate a lot of time and resources so that the children receive a Jewish education even in such a place, and never forget their purpose and role in the world," say Mendel's parents.
As part of these efforts, Mendel attends an online Jewish 'school' established by Chabad institutions for the children of shluchim. "It's not the same as a regular school, but I enjoy participating in class, and I have friends too. It's fun," says Mendel.
The online school consists of three age divisions and has 775 Jewish students from about 60 countries worldwide. Watch the video where Mendel gives a glimpse into his world and daily life:
